Super cars have always had a lot of appeal; they are cars that most of us dream of owning. Unfortunately in most cases that is all it will be because of the extremely high prices that these cars come with. That may be starting to change however as the technology that goes into building these cars becomes more affordable. Of course there will always be new technology introduced that pushes super cars to whole new levels of performance and price.
Over the last few years super cars have become much more common than they used to be in the past. In large part this has to do with improvements in technology. You can now build engines with huge amounts of horse power at a very reasonable price. A few years ago a car that produced four hundred horse power was considered to be a super car; nowadays there are lots of mid priced cars that are producing that kind of horsepower. This has inevitably pushed the super cars up to even higher levels of power.
Of course there is a lot more to a super car than just lots of horse power. Again technology has really made a level of performance that in the past would have been impossible more widely available.
The most noticeable area in this regard is when it comes to the transmission. These days pretty much all super cars are using semi automatic transmissions that are based on those used in formula one race cars. These transmissions allow for incredibly fast shifts that have greatly improved the acceleration that these cars are capable of.
The other big change that super cars have gone through in recent years is the way that they are built. These days most of them are built of carbon fiber using monocoque construction. There are several reasons for this but the biggest is that it makes the cars stronger. This is useful not just from the standpoint of safety but also when it comes to performance. The ability to make the chassis stiffer has greatly improved handling. The other advantage that is offered by carbon fiber is that designers can build cars with shapes that wouldn't otherwise be possible. This has resulted in cars that are much more appealing visually.
The definition of super car is starting to change and it really isn't clear what does and doesn't qualify anymore. The Audi R8 for example has brought super car performance to a whole new group of people who in the past wouldn't have been able to afford. On the other hand the Bentley Continental Supersport has brought the same performance to top end luxury cars. Then there is the Pagani Zonda which is really just a street legal race car, it takes performance to a whole new level and may require us to completely change the definition of what a super car is.
